Description: A small to medium-sized tree occurring naturally in many areas of the U.S. It is used on a wide variety of sites for erosion control, shelterbelts and wildlife plantings westward. Twigs have short, strong, paired, catclaw-shaped thorns. Black locust is a legume, and the inner bark, young leaves and seeds are poisonous to livestock and humans. The wood is strong and durable. Can be difficult to control once established. |
