Description: A broadleaf plant that grows about 1.5 to 6.5 feet tall. The fruit is a bur that is usually 0.5 to 1.5 inches long that has hooks on the end of the prickles to aid in dispersal by attaching itself to animals. The bur is the inspiration for the invention of Velcro. Cocklebur grows in disturbed areas and moist soil. It has little wildlife value and is poisonous to humans.
