Description: A large tree with a narrow or sometimes broad, rounded crown. Common on limestone outcrops, creek bottoms and well-drained uplands. Rare on flood plains. The acorns are eaten by many species of wildlife. The leaves and twigs may be browsed by white-tailed deer and some livestock. Chinquapin oak is a member of the "White" oak group whose leaf veins do not extend past the leaf margin to form bristles. However, as an exception to the rule, this species sometimes has veins that extend beyond the leaf margin. |
