Description: A small tree or shrub found on a variety of sites mainly in the southwest. Locally abundant in other areas. Twigs are sparsely spined. Can be an invasive shrub on poorly managed rangeland. Mesquite is a deep-rooted legume and the fruit, stems and foliage are sometimes eaten by wildlife and livestock. Smoke from the wood provides a good flavor to smoked or grilled food. The wood can be used to make furniture and flooring. |
