Description: A medium to large tree occurring in low moist woods of bottomlands along streams and rivers, and on uplands in the eastern U.S. The husk surrounding the fruit is thin and has four raised edges or wings ending halfway. Has bright yellow buds. Leaves have 7 to 9 leaflets that are pubescent beneath. The kernels are bitter. Also commonly called Pignut hickory.
