Description: A large tree with an open, irregular crown and a large straight trunk common on wet soil along streams and rivers in the central and eastern U.S. The bark is smooth or flaky, often mottled white, tan and green. A fairly durable wood used for everything from butcher blocks to pulpwood. Often used by turkeys as a roost tree, especially near streams because of its open canopy with heavy limbs. Sometimes planted as an ornamental. |
