Description: A medium-sized tree found in bottomlands and the moist soil of uplands. Sometimes used as an ornamental. One of the largest species in the Prunus genus native to the United Sates. Fruit is black when ripe and is eaten by many species of birds and mammals. The slightly bitter juicy pulp is edible although the seeds are reportedly poisonous. Wilted leaves can be poisonous to cattle due to prussic acid.
