Description: A shrub or sometimes small tree found on rocky or sandy soils on hillsides, along streams and in woods. Leaves are aromatic, emitting a disagreeable odor when crushed. Reported to contain an alkaloid and poisonous saponin and has been known to cause phytophotodermatitis, a condition that can sometimes cause the skin to redden, swell or blister when exposed to sunlight. The fruit has been used as a substitute for hops in brewing beer. |
