Description: A large shrub or small tree occurring in forest understories, ravines and stream bottoms mainly in the southeastern U.S.. Can be used as an ornamental because of the large leaves and showy red immature and black mature fruit. The fruit is eaten by some species of birds. Can be a prolific re-sprouter after a fire. The bark, leaves and fruit are reportedly poisonous.
