Description: A small tree with a rounded crown occurring along streams and in open uplands in the central and eastern U.S. May form thickets. Twigs are equipped with long, slender spines. The leaves are spoon-shaped. Often planted in wildlife plantings, hedge rows and as an ornamental. The distinctly long spines and shiny dark green leaves without lobes are recognizable characteristics.
