Its inflorescence is purple and often covered with an oily substance leading to other common names such as "soapgrass" and "greasegrass." It is often confused with Johnsongrass but has four to seven florets per spikelet, whereas Johnsongrass appears to have a single floret when viewed with the naked eye. It provides screening and nesting cover for some wildlife species. Seeds are used by some birds. It is of fair value to cattle.
