Description: A medium-sized tree widespread on a variety of sites in the understory of forests. Leaves are rough above and may have two to three lobes on young stems. The milky sap from leaves and unripe fruit is poisonous. Fruits resembling a raspberry or blackberry mature red to purple in the summer and although sparse, are relished by birds and squirrels and can be consumed by humans as well.
